Seventeen Right Here

Seventeen is a group that a lot of people shy away from due to their massive size and frankly an intimidating discography. Originally (you guessed it) they had 17 members but 4 left before debut for various reasons. You might say wow they name makes no sense but you would be wrong- 13 members, 3 sub units, 1 team = SEVENTEEN. The 3 sub units are the performance line, the vocal line and the rap line- however other configurations of 2 or more have lead to some really great projects (which will be talked about on this page as well!). Seventeen is not only talented but their performances are always amazing and enchanting- it will be hard to deny stanning them once you start to dive into their world!

The group debuted in 2015 under Pledis Entertainment (now a subsidiary under HYBE) and landed on the fandom name CARATS from their song “Shining Diamonds” on their debut album. They have so much talent in one group from writing lyrics and producing music to insane dancers and actors. Their music is amazing, their stage presence unreal and their fun behind the scenes and variety show (Going Seventeen) leave fans and non fans wanting more. Now for the part many of you dread… learning all 13 members!

Choi Seungcheol (S.Coups)- leader, leader of the rap line, dad of the group, spokesperson

Yoon Jeonghan- vocalist, mom of the group, cheater at all games (he is not to be trusted)

Joshua Hong- one of two Americans in the group, vocalist, English translator for the group, and possibly Jeonghan’s evil twin (does that make him an angel?)

Wen Junhui- one of two Chinese members in the group, dancer and vocalist, quiet chaos, loves cats

Kwon Soon Young (Hoshi)- he might say he’s a tiger but he’s Korean. Performance team leader, rapper, honestly thinks he’s a tiger and tries to get everyone on board with that (makes his hands into tiger paws whenever he has the chance). Has made his own term “Horanghae” which is a combination of ‘Tiger’ and ‘I love you’ in Korean

Jeon Wonwoo- rapper and vocalist, quiet gamer boy until he starts rapping.

Lee Jihoon (Woozi)- vocal team leader and producer for the group. He might be small but his bank account is not and gives the members his black card frequently

Lee Seokmin (Dokyeom/DK)- vocalist, energetic and playful, the true sunshine of the group

Kim Mingyu- rapper and vocalist. He might look big and beefy but he’s a giant puppy dog and often gets (playfully) bullied by other members because it’s like he thinks his size and muscle is all for show

Xu Minghao (THE8)- one of two Chinese members, dancer and vocalist, acts like an old man, loves to meditate and drink tea, does NOT play along with Hoshi’s Horanghae agenda and does not become animated/funny until he steps for back on Chinese soil and he has ditched his brothers in chaos

Boo Seungkwon- vocalist, entertainer extraordinaire, king of variety shows, so sassy he cannot hide his feelings from his face

Hansol ‘Vernon’ Chwe- American/Korean, rapper and vocalist, former child actor, loves to sleep and cannot be bothered by anything

Lee Chan (DINO)- Maknae. dancer and vocalist, emotionally wise and mature and Seventeen’s punching bag (there are no Maknae privileges in this group!)

They recently came out with their own character line (ala BT21, SKZOO, Aniteez etc) called Miniteen. Keeping with the chaos Seventeen is known for the characters did NOT disappoint.

S.Coup’s Choit Cherry- a cute bunny

Jeonghan’s Jjongtoram- a squirrel in a bunny costume

Joshua’s Shuashumi- a deer

Jun’s O_C_L- 3 cats stacked together

Hoshi’s TAMTAM- (not surprisingly) a tiger

Wonwoo’s Foxdungee- a fox in glasses

Woozi’s Ppyopuli- a rice ball

THE8’s THEpalee- a frog

DK’s DOA- a puppy

Mingyu’s KimJa- a potato (stemming I believe from a live where a fan called him a potato)

Seungkwon’s Bboogyuli- an orange (fitting because he’s from Jeju Island)

Vernon’s Nonver- essentially just Vernon in a hoodie

Dino’s Chandalee- an otter

Sub Unit Projects:

The most popular sub unit is BSS (BooSeokSoon) the trio is composed of DK, Hoshi, and Seungkwon and since 2018 they have released 2 albums. Their song Fighting featuring Lee Youngji was even the official cheer song for South Korea at the Paris Olympics!

JeonghanxWonwoo released a successful album ‘This Man’ in 2024, and it was amazing.

HxW debuted in 2025 and is the insane combo of Hoshi and Woozi. They did two mini albums together and a fan meeting/concert in Asia… Why not the US boys?!

There is rumor of an S.Coups x Mingyu unit to debut in 2025 as well…

The group also releases solo songs as well as unit songs on each album- notable entries are the vocal team’s Candy and Cheers to Youth, the hip hop team’s Water and Lalali, and the performance team’s Rain and Spell.

Many members have also releases solo projects separate from Seventeen and it’s always super interested to see where each member goes for their solo work! In 2024, THE8 released his first solo album, joining Woozi, Hoshi, Jun, Vernon, Jeonghan, Wonwoo, and Dino for solo projects!

Military Service

If you aren’t aware, all men must serve 18 months in the military- mandatory. Women can volunteer to join, but that means all our Korean members of any group must enlist at some point. Some groups go one at a time (dragging it out to give everyone a break and to work on solo projects or other interests) or some go essentially all at the same time (like BTS) and release things they had pre recorded to keep us interested while gone.

Seventeen has such a unique line up that I’m personally really interested to see what they end up doing. With so many members, they could go in groups, leaving others to do sub units. In addition, they have a good ‘foreign line’ that could be active all the way through (or Jun can go off and act in some more dramas).

S.Coups will most likely have limited physical service (like Suga of BTS) because of his extensive knee/leg injuries and subsequent surgeries. Joshua will be exempt (American) along with Jun and Minghao (Chinese), but I believe Vernon will serve as he is a dual citizen and chose to fulfill his Korean Citizenship service. I am excited to see what this next chapter brings for the boys!
